A lot of contact lens wearers will sleep with their lenses on at some point, some by accident others because convenience. The problem arises when you continuously sleep with your lenses, without updating your cleaning regimen. There are a few lenses on the market that are safe to sleep with, for up to 7 nights, provided you follow a strict cleaning regimen, that is not limited to multipurpose solutions , but include intensive cleaning agents such as peroxide solutions.
This week I saw a horrible looking bacterial keratitis (infection of the cornea), induced by poor cleaning of overnight wear lenses. Needless to say in this case, you need to wear only your specs while the cornea is being treated. Look after your lenses, seek advice from your optom when you’re not sure (I’m generally available all the time) and keep your eyes healthy.
